This is a mixed media piece that uses different materials in layers. I used paper mache paper, orange paper, playing cards, buttons, and fire designs. I was told I should focus on things like color schemes, so I focused on orange and red. Based on the feedback for this, people think that I did really well on this. The only problem is that this is a form of art I don't really understand. The whole time, I kept thinking to myself "This seems like something that a 6 year old could do". That isn't really a thought you want going through your head while in a high school art class. That being said, I do like the colors and the use of the playing cards. Also, the dried gel medium gives the piece an interesting texture.
This was the first time I had ever done a printmaking project and according to all the people who gave me feedback (so about four people), they all said I was pretty good at it. Actually placing the print down was difficult at first because the print tends to slide and throw off the colors. After a couple prints, I sort of got the hang of it.
The main themes of this project were ancient architecture/ wonders of the world and prehistoric times. So I couldn't find many great ideas for architecture and the ones that I did seemed difficult. So I went with raptors. And who doesn't like raptors? ......Okay, a lot of people. But the point is that they were easier to draw and, frankly, more fun. Besides, dinosaurs make everything better. The pictures I used for inspiration were mainly from Jurassic Park, because where else would I get them from? My two major problems during this project were the placement of the prints and not cutting enough of the print away. I already talked about the print sliding and all I could do for that was to just keep printing. My solution for the second problem was to just make the best of it. For example, the yellow lines in the background. Those weren't supposed to be there, but I thought they made it look more interesting, so I kept them. On the technical side, I like the use of space in the print because nowhere does it seem empty. While this piece isn't perfect, prints don't have to be. The yellow lines in the background were an accident, but they make the background interesting. The idea process was pretty standard for me. A week later I actually started. When we were told one theme was prehistoric eras, I knew that if I was going to use a dinosaur, it'd be a raptor. As a whole, the print was one of my best projects this semester and, honestly, it kind of came out of left field. For this project, we were given a part of a famous painting and we were tasked with painting it. My part was the top right of this painting of a shell. Looking at the two side by side, I think my painting sort of resembles the real thing. Although I didn't know at the time, I was looking at the piece of the painting upside down the whole time.
I Have a Global Awareness of Artmaking
For this project, we drew from a cup of artists. We then had to make a painting based on said artist. I had made a joke saying "I'm going to get someone really complicated like Van Gogh or something." Welp. Here I am. Since Van Gogh had a lot of dry brush strokes, I went nuts with my brush. I looks messy, but that's Van Gogh's charm (at least that's what I'm telling myself) I Developed My Art Making Skills Before this, I hadn't really painted much. But, I think this looks pretty good. My favorite parts of this are the sky and the water (Yes, I realize that's like 85% of the painting). The colors and the brush strokes just look really smooth. I Reflect As a whole, I think the project went well. Putting aside the fact that I took about a week and a half to get an idea, I got it done before it was due and it turned out really good. Could I have done some aspects better? Of course. The lights in particular. But that's art. You make mistakes and learn from them. I Developed My Art Making Skills
With this project, I feel like I improved my clay making skills. So, I probably went from below-average to mediocre. I feel like the paint does make it look much better and I really like the color of the yolk of the eggs. I Take Risks I'd say this entire project was a risk, but this was a necessary project. If you can't tell, I'm not one for sculpture. I've never really liked how my clay pieces turn out, but maybe it's just because I prefer 2D over 3D. Luckily, this project didn't turn out that badly, in my opinion. I Solve Problems The biggest problem I face with every project is that I can never think of ideas. Maybe it's because I procrastinate. Maybe I'm not the most creative person when it comes to most kinds of art. Once I get over that hill, it's all downhill and I work hard to get it done. It doesn't sound like it should work, and maybe my luck will run out, but it's always worked out in the end. These are the sketches and in-progress for my Clay Food project. I'm making fried eggs and bacon. Also, remember when I was good at doing sketches? Me neither.
I Developed My Art Making Skills
This was the first project I actually used prismacolors for and I have to say, they are way better than normal colored pencils. Colored pencils always looked off when I used them, but these feel a lot smoother. I just like how this piece looks as a whole. I also like what I did with the background and I feel like it looks better than just a solid black background (plus, that would have been torture for me and my colored pencil). I Solve Problems While I was drawing this, I realize that I didn't make the grapes big enough and I was to far to erase everything. So I just had to make more grapes and more branches and I had to fill up the space somehow. I feel like I sort of filled it with the background, but I probably could have added extra branches or something. I Reflect Before starting the final piece, I did think about if I should do something different. After some thought, I realized I wasn't going to get a better idea (or another idea in general). Then I tested out which colors I should use, mainly for the branches. Eventually, I stuck with brown and green. Then I tried out the colors on different color paper. Dark brown didn't look good, not much showed up on black and white was too bland. The colors showed up the best on the tan, so I picked that. These are my sketches and in progress picture for the Georgia O'Keeffe inspired project. For the final picture, I was using prismacolor pencils.
These are more apples I drew using different styles (top to bottom: colored pencil, water color, colored pencil). The water color looks pretty good to me but it was a little difficult to use. The colored pencil pictures just don't look good to me. Maybe if I use prismacolors they would have looked better.
I Create Original Art
For this project, I just decided to do some unique buildings in perspective. It wasn't based on anything in particular and I think it turned out really good. I tried to give each building something different to set it apart from the others, ranging from a tree on the roof to different types of windows. I Developed My Art Making Skills This project caused me to improve on my perspective skills. I hadn't done a lot of perspective before this project, but now I feel pretty good about it. I also did this project in pencil and I still feel like I'm getting better. I Solve Problems I came across a few problems while doing this, mainly the bricks on the hotel and thinking of something to put in the glass room on the middle skyscraper. The bricks on the right side of that hotel got really small and cluttered around those windows and it was difficult to keep the pattern going. I really couldn't think of anything interesting to put in that room, so I just put some benches in and even then, I could have added something else. |
